How Adoption has Affected Us

Family Photo

Our lives were truly changed through the adoption of our son, Oliver.

We had always dreamt of being parents, ever since we first started dating.  Being a same-sex couple, we knew our path to fatherhood would be non-traditional, and adoption always felt like the right journey for us.

In 2021, Oliver’s birth mom picked us to be his adoptive family.  We will never forget the moment of meeting his birth mom at a restaurant where she gave us a sonogram photo and told us about her commitment to adoption.  That first moment that we held Oliver at the hospital is the single greatest day in our lives and we owe it all to his birth mom.

We continue to have an open adoption with her to this day - sharing pictures and stories via text, and even meeting for lunch or at a park throughout the year. It’s important for Oliver to know his birth story, and how selfless and brave of a decision his birth mom made when choosing adoption. We are forever grateful.

What it Means to Become Parents

Smiles at the Pumpkin Patch

Becoming parents has been the most amazing and fulfilling thing we’ve experienced in our life. Before we adopted our son, we knew that we’d love him with all of our heart but nothing could have prepared us for the way that we actually feel being his dads. The love that we feel for our son is beyond words! As parents, we see our role as helping him to learn about and explore the world while fostering his imagination and creativity.  We strive to introduce him to everything we can so that he can find the things that he loves.  We help him understand right from wrong while supporting him with our love each and every day.

The most incredible thing about becoming a parent has been the opportunity to see the world again through our son’s eyes. As an adult, it is easy to overlook the “small” things - but babies and toddlers are fascinated by everything around them - big and small. Our son has given us a deeper appreciation of the world around us. We also love how much you learn as a parent. Your role as a parent is to help to guide and teach your children - but we’ve learned so much too! Our son has taught us patience and how to find joy in everything.

Our Life Priorities

Playing at the Park

Family has always been the most important thing in our lives and is one of the biggest reasons that we fell in love. We also see our friends as a part of our family. They are a support network for us and we know we can rely on them for anything. Oliver has so many “extra aunts and uncles” who come to spend time with him (and bring surprise gifts!) As a family, we prioritize having fun and creating meaningful experiences. We are always finding fun things to do like spending days at the local park, enjoying our city’s zoo and children’s museum, going to the trampoline park or just having play time as a family. We want our children to grow up experiencing and learning from the world around them and having incredible family memories. Being healthy and active is also a top priority in our lives. We both love to work out, we go on long walks as a family around our neighborhood, and, when we can squeeze it in, love to play tennis. We also love to seek out and experience new things. We love to travel and have continued to plan fun new travel adventures with our son. Whenever we travel we always do our research and find interesting, new things to check out. Recently, we took a family trip to Disney world which was a blast!

Our Extended Families

George's Family

Our parents instilled in us a sense of strong family values and the importance of putting family first. We feel that this upbringing has shaped us into the family men that we are today. We both come from a close-knit family unit with a very large extended family – something we bonded over when we first started dating. Having those strong relationships with our parents and siblings has truly formed this sense of family in everything we do – this was the driving reason we wanted to become fathers. George is the oldest of three siblings. Growing up, his sister and brother were his best friends – he served as best man to his brother and ‘man of honor’ to his sister in their respective weddings. The six of us (including his siblings and their spouses) have a very close relationship and all had children within the same year. It has been such a blast going through the same phase of life together. We travel together and spend quality time sharing stories, laughing, and enjoy each other’s company. George's parents, also known as "Mimi and Papa" live about two hours from where we live today and visit often. Luke has one brother and we are extremely close to his family. Our son loves to spend time with his "big" cousins and they treat him like he's one of their siblings. They love playing together and he especially loves when he gets to go and visit at their house to play in their bounce house.  Luke's parents watch our son two days a week and we have dinner together every Monday. Our son loves his "Grandma and Pap" and we are so happy that he gets to have such a close relationship with them.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a suburb right outside of a large city in Pennsylvania. Our neighborhood is filled with many young families who have become our close friends. Our neighborhood has a great close-knit feel and neighbors frequently host get togethers. Halloween is especially fun in the neighborhood - with lots of kids running from house to house collecting candy.

The neighborhood is surrounded by walking trails and ponds - we love to get out on the weekends and enjoy a walk as a family. Our neighborhood is located near many parks, restaurants, coffee shops and fun family activities like trampoline parks, a community pool and indoor playgrounds. We spend most of our weekends on family adventures - checking out a local playground or bouncing at the trampoline park!

We built our home in 2023 - it's a 5-bedroom, 4.5 bath craftsman style home in a new community.  It was a fun and rewarding process to design our home to be exactly how we wanted it to be. Our home is filled with lots of natural light and comfortable and inviting spaces for our family. We recently renovated our basement and added a great space for family movie nights - it has become our favorite hangout space.

From Us to You

We are truly honored, thankful, and excited that you are considering us as potential adoptive parents to your child. We understand that this is an extremely difficult and selfless decision to make, and we are inspired and humbled to be part of your journey.

We are Luke and George and we've been together for 16 years and married for almost 10 years. We have both always known that we wanted to be parents. We were both brought up in close, strong family units and, from a very early age, were taught to make our family values the top priority in our lives. Family has (and will) always come first and we are so excited to instill that in our child and share the love of our close-knit families with them. It is because of our upbringings that we knew very early in our relationship that we wanted to be dads. We have always known what we wanted in our lives and the “vision” we had for the future; it was one of the reasons our relationship worked so well from the start and was part of the many things that made us fall in love with each other.

We met our freshman year of college and bonded over our love for theater and singing. We remained friends until our senior year when we began “officially” dating. As we neared our college graduation, we decided to start one of the most exciting adventures of our life: moving to New York City! We had both been drawn to the electric energy and overflow of culture that you find in that city. We have such amazing memories of our time living in NYC; we enjoyed the adventure, our tiny apartment and the group of amazing people that became lifelong friends. Ultimately, the one thing that brought us back to our current city was the relationships we have with our families and the desire to be in a city that was a little slower - a place we could settle down and start a family.

We are so excited to become a family of four (six if you count our pups: Hank and Otis). We have loved seeing each other morph into incredible fathers: Luke with his hard-working, driven spirit who loves to learn new things, and George with his kind and steady personality who creates a nurturing and loving environment for our family. We recognize how lucky we are to have both been surrounded by supportive, loving families our entire lives. We are eager and thrilled to share that love and family with our children. We also look forward to watching our son Oliver become a big brother. He is over-the-moon excited to play that role for our future child - to teach his future sibling about all the joys and love this family has to offer.

We are also excited to get to know you - we want you to be part of our lives as a family. We hope to build a strong relationship with you so that your child will always know how much love went into this decision. We want to integrate your relationship with your child into our family-unit for the entirety of your child’s life. We hope to do this at your pace, and with your guidance and lead - creating a relationship that you want and feel comfortable with. At the very least, we would love to send you letters and pictures of your child as they grow. As a same-sex couple, your child will have two dads - but you will always be the only mom and we think that is a wonderful thing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our profile. We hope that you have connected to our story. We understand how important this decision is for you, and we are so grateful that you have taken some time to consider us as potential parents for your child. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
